Russia has increased grain transit through Kazakhstan

Transit transportation of Russian grain through Kazakhstan in 2021 amounted to 424 thousand tons.

This is 48 thousand tons more than in 2020 (376 thousand tons), reports inbusiness.kz with reference to Eldala.kz.

This is especially noticeable for deliveries to Kyrgyzstan, which is a member of the EAEU, and for rail transportation to which an increased transit tariff is not applied. In 2021, the transit of Russian grain to Kyrgyzstan through the territory of Kazakhstan amounted to 286 thousand tons, against 168 thousand tons in 2020.

In other Central Asian countries that are not members of the EAEU, transit traffic decreased in 2021. Thus, deliveries to Uzbekistan amounted to 21 thousand tons against 31 thousand tons in 2020, to Turkmenistan – 3 thousand tons against 8 thousand a year earlier, to Tajikistan – 2 thousand tons against 8 thousand.

However, now the situation is changing, and the volume of transit will grow. The fact is that the higher yield of Russian wheat than in Kazakhstan determines its lower cost. This helps it successfully compete with more expensive Kazakh grain in the Central Asian market, recouping transportation costs.

In particular, earlier Tajikistan had already announced plans to completely replace Kazakh wheat with Russian wheat. At the moment, this country imports 90% of its grain from Kazakhstan.
