Metalloinvest is negotiating with the UAE on cooperation in the production of pellets

DUBAI / UAE /, December 4. / TASS /. Metalloinvest is negotiating with the United Arab Emirates on cooperation in the production of specialized pellets for the manufacture of steel using the direct reduction of iron method. This was announced by the General Director of Metalloinvest Nazim Efendiev during the plenary session of the Forum of Russia: Determining the Future as part of the National Day of the Russian Federation at the Expo 2020 exhibition.

Smelting such steel uses hydrocarbons such as natural gas, which reduces the level of greenhouse gas emissions, he explained. In this way, the company expects to contribute to the protection of the environment and, in particular, to the fight against rising temperatures in the next few decades. Now the world mining and metallurgical industry emits up to 8-9% of all greenhouse gas.

“In order to produce such steel, it is also necessary to produce raw materials – the so-called DR grade pellets (pellets for direct reduction). And we have been negotiating with our partners in the Emirates for a long time about the possibility of producing this product, ”he said.
Wire rod mill
Efendiyev said that Metalloinvest will build a rolling mill for the production of wire rod at its Hamriyah Steel mill in Sharjah (UAE).

“Well, Hamriyah Steel itself is developing: just the other day we are holding a board of directors of our company here at the enterprise, and we will take a decision on the construction of a new rolling mill for the production of wire rod,” Efendiyev said. – That is, we are expanding the range of our products here. We believe that the prospects for investment in the Emirates are very good. ”

The Hamriyah Steel plant with a capacity of 1 million tonnes of steel rebar per year was launched in 2010.
