Yandex will launch delivery of products in the UAE by courier robots

What’s happening:

Yandex has signed an agreement with Dubai-based shopping center operator Majid Al Futtaim to use the company’s rovers for the unmanned delivery of products from the Carrefour supermarket chain in the UAE from 2022. The signing ceremony took place on October 27 at the World Congress on Unmanned Vehicles in Dubai.

To make a purchase, users need to download the MAF Carrefour mobile app, in which they can track the movement of the robot in real time while it delivers the order to its destination.

The power of the drone is 1.5 kW, it moves at a speed of 8 km / h on sidewalks and other pedestrian areas, observing traffic rules and freely navigating in space.

For now, Yandex’s rovers will be able to deliver goods at a distance of no more than 3 km from the base.

It is noted that Yandex’s partnership with Majid Al Futtaim will help balance the growing demand for online orders in the region, as well as reduce the amount of harmful emissions into the environment.

What does it mean

The active development of unmanned technologies has made a real revolution in the field of transport solutions. Whether it is transporting passengers or goods, automation has a number of advantages: drones are safe and economical to operate, they can reduce environmental damage and optimize logistics.
It is worth noting that in the era of rapid growth of the e-commerce market, the demand for unmanned technologies for the delivery of goods is growing.

“Around the world, demand continues to grow for the automation of last mile delivery. This technology is now interested not only in companies, but also in cities and even entire regions.

Autonomous delivery can improve the lives of people in cities, and allow companies to optimize their logistics and cut costs, “says Dmitry Polishchuk, head of unmanned technologies at Yandex.

The UAE is not the first country to use this innovative solution. Yandex’s network of delivery robots is already delivering orders from Yandex.Eda in Moscow and St. universities. Also in October it became known that Yandex and Russian Post were launching a pilot project to deliver parcels from several post offices in Moscow.

The American startup for the production of autonomous vehicles Nuro is also engaged in unmanned delivery of goods – in the fall of 2021, the company was able to raise about $ 8.6 billion to implement a project for the delivery of online orders in the United States by robots.
